Booking Modules

What is a module?

Every study program comprises various modules. A module is a complete learning unit in terms of content and duration. Modules may consist of one or more courses. Modules are generally taught over one or two semesters. When you pass a module, you receive a predefined number of ECTS credits. A module is deemed passed when the associated assessment has been completed successfully. Assessments may consist of written exams, presentations, papers or other methods.

Which modules do I need to book?

You’ll find information on the modules to be booked and any other requirements in the program regulation, sample curriculum and in the module catalogue for your study program. Please also note any module-specific features. You’ll find information on booking modules at your faculty on the following pages:

For students at the Vetsuisse Faculty, modules for the first three years of study are booked centrally by the dean's office.

Please note: If you’re studying part-time or want to take things a bit easier at first, you can also book fewer modules per semester. You’ll find more information about part-time study on the Student Advisory Services website:

Various types of modules

In terms of content, a distinction is drawn between the following types of modules:

  • Compulsory Modules are required for all students in a study program in accordance with the program regulation.
  • Core Elective Modules can be selected from a particular area in a predefined scope in accordance with the program regulation.
  • Elective Modules are optional and can be selected from a defined area in accordance with the program regulation.

In terms of booking procedures, a distinction is made between the following module types:

  • Booking Modules do not have a restricted number of places. Sufficient places are available.
  • Request Modules have a restricted number of places and can be requested during the request period. Places are assigned on the basis of the criteria published in the course catalogue.
  • Application Modules have a restricted number of places and can be requested by submitting an application during the request period. Places are assigned manually. If specified in the course catalogue, documents must be submitted. These documents can be uploaded during the application process.

Booking modules

As soon as the necessary tuition fees have been received, you’ll get access to the module booking tool. You’ll find the login details in the application portal under “Documents”. Look at the course catalogue and the information provided by your faculty to plan which modules you need to book to meet your study goals.

Note the booking and cancellation deadlines

You can only book modules within the applicable module booking periods. To book modules in the Fall Semester, the module booking period starts in mid-August, and for modules in the Spring Semester, it starts in mid-January.

Within the relevant cancellation periods you can withdraw from modules you have booked. Please note that once the cancellation period has elapsed, your bookings are deemed to be binding, and you are obligated to complete the associated assessments. If you don't complete the relevant assessment, you are deemed to have failed.
